Your sitemap is a file that lists all of the pages on your website, making it easier for search engines like Google to find and index your content. This guide walks you through how to locate your sitemap URL and what to do if you'd like to speed up the indexing process.
Before you start
Your Jane Websites site needs to be live with an active subscription and a connected domain before your sitemap will be accessible.
How to Find Your Sitemap
Your sitemap is automatically generated by Jane Websites and is always located at the same address. Walk through the steps below to find your sitemap.
- Take your website's domain name. For example: janewebsites.com.
- Add /sitemap.xml to the end of it, so it looks like this: janewebsites.com/sitemap.xml
- Paste this full URL into your browser's address bar and press Enter.
- If your site is live, you'll see a page listing all the URLs on your website.
Optional: How to Submit Your Sitemap to Google
If you've recently launched your website and want to help Google find it sooner, you can submit your sitemap directly through Google Search Console.
- Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with a Google account (or create an Google account. To learn how to sign up, take a look at Google's guide on Getting started with Search Console)
- Add your website as a property by entering your domain name.
- Follow the on-screen steps to verify that you own the site.
- In the left-hand menu, click Sitemaps.
- In the Add a new sitemap field, enter your sitemap URL (for example: janewebsites.com/sitemap.xml) and click Submit.
Easy as that! Your sitemap is ready to share with search engines. If you've just launched, keep in mind that it can take a few weeks for Google to fully index your site even after submitting your sitemap.
Note
Google takes a minimum of three to six weeks to start indexing a new site, so needing some patience is normal after a fresh launch. Submitting your sitemap through Google Search Console helps move things along, but it doesn't guarantee immediate results.
