If you're moving your domain to a new registrar, you'll need to unlock your domain and get your transfer code (also called an EPP code) before the transfer can go through. This guide walks you through where to find these settings and how to get the code you'll need.

Before you start

This process happens at your current domain registrar (such as GoDaddy, Hover, or Squarespace), not in Jane Websites. You'll need admin access to your domain registrar account to complete these steps.

How to Unlock Your Domain

Before you can transfer your domain, you’ll need to unlock it at your current registrar. The steps below walk you through finding and turning off that lock. This process may look a bit different on your domain registrar, so take a look at their knowledge base for more tailored steps.

  1. Log in to your current domain registrar’s account.
  2. Navigate to your Domain Settings or Domain Management section.
  3. Find the Domain Lock or Transfer Lock setting.
  4. Toggle the lock off to unlock your domain.
  5. Save your changes.

How to Get Your Transfer Code

Once your domain is unlocked, you’ll need to grab the transfer code before your new registrar can complete the move. The steps below walk you through where to find it. This process may look a little different depending on your domain registrar, so it’s worth checking their knowledge base for exact steps specific to your account.

  1. While still in your Domain Settings, look for an option called Transfer Code, EPP Code, or Authorization Code.
  2. Click Request Code or Generate Code, depending on your registrar.
  3. Check your email for the code, as some registrars send it directly to the account holder’s inbox rather than displaying it on screen.
  4. Copy the code exactly as it appears, since it’s case-sensitive and often includes a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.

How to Add The Code to Your New Domain

This process may look a little different depending on your new registrar, so it’s worth checking their knowledge base for exact steps specific to your account. Generally speaking, once you have your domain unlocked and your transfer code in hand, you’ll initiate the transfer from your new registrar. The steps below walk you through the general process.

  1. Log in to the account with your new domain registrar.
  2. Navigate to the Transfer Domain or Transfer In section.
  3. Enter your domain name exactly as it appears with your current registrar.
  4. Enter the transfer code (EPP code) you received from your previous registrar.
  5. Confirm any contact or billing details requested for the new account.
  6. Submit the transfer request.
  7. Check your email for a confirmation message, since most registrars require you to approve the transfer before it goes through
  8. Click Save or Confirm to complete the transfer.

You're good to go! With your domain unlocked, your transfer code in hand, and the transfer submitted to your new registrar, you’re well on your way to moving your domain over. If any of this feels too technical or you’d just like a hand walking through it, email our support team at support@janewebsites.com, we’re happy to help!

Note

Domain transfers can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to fully process, depending on your registrar. Your website may experience a brief period of downtime during this window, so it’s best to avoid making other major changes, like updating DNS records, until the transfer is complete.
